Chapter 12

Jack ran the whole way back up the hill to the tower.

The dungeon had been apparently unsurprised by the reappearance of the portal. “Oh, that,” it said. “Yes, that’s always been there.”

At that moment, it had been occupied sending giant spiders against the adventurers, and Jack had decided he could safely leave the dungeon to it. He used his dungeon ability to manifest his physical body just outside the dungeon entrance so as not to disturb the adventurers in their fight, and immediately began to tear up the hill toward the Shadow Tower.

Dawn was breaking as he came up to the gates of the tower.

“Lachlan!” he panted as he burst into the dining room. “Where’s Lachlan?”

“What’s wrong?” Ivan said, immediately concerned. “Lachlan’s still in bed. What’s happening?”

“Nothing’s wrong,” Jack assured Ivan. “It’s fine, it’s great—but… the dungeon portal has reopened!”

“What!?” cried a voice from the doorway.

Jack turned and smiled. It was Lachlan.

“You should be in bed, master!” Ivan scolded, but Lachlan waved his concern away with a flap of one black-gloved hand.

“I’ve been in bed for days, Ivan,” Lachlan said. “I feel quite well again.”

He faced Jack and smiled. And it was true: he did look well again, if a little more tired and haggard than he otherwise did. He was wearing his usual outfit of black robes, black boots, and black gloves.

“Come, Jack,” Lachlan said. “Tell me about this. Is it there now? I thought I felt a disruption in the aether, and that’s why I got ready and came down. I had a feeling something would be happening.”

“Shall we go down and look?” Jack said.

Ivan let out a harrumph of dissatisfaction with this idea but did not protest more than that. Jack suspected that Ivan was putting on a show but was not actually all that concerned. If he had genuinely been afraid for Lachlan’s health, he would have put his foot down. Instead, he grumbled that he would go and heat up some soup for when they got back, then he stomped back to the kitchen.

Lachlan smiled. “He’s done well,” he said. “And without his healing powers I would have died a hundred times over the years we’ve been together. But he’s got a taste for fuss and drama too that he can’t restrain.”

Jack raised an eyebrow, thinking of the fire, darkness, smoke, and eerie noises and general drama that often accompanied Lachlan’s own magic, but he left his thoughts unspoken.

Lachlan laughed, seeming to understand his pupil’s thoughts anyway. “Perhaps I also have a taste for drama. Maybe that’s why Ivan and I get on so well.” He grinned. “Come on, Jack, I could do with some light and some fresh air. Let’s go out and see this portal of yours.”

The day was cool and clear as they made their way slowly down the hill. For all his assurances that he was fine, Lachlan did seem to be walking slower and stepping more carefully than Jack was used to seeing him do.

When Lachlan stubbed his toe
